It was 12 at midnight when I read this portion from the Scripture. This time it had a lot more to say than it usually had. With my eyes firmly fixed, I could not stop but read it again and again, until I felt the word really soaked in.
Here we go…
In Mathew 5: 13-16 we read Jesus saying –
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
Is it not a delight when Jesus calls us SALT and LIGHT of the world?
The only word that came as I completed reading this portion is ‘RESPONSIBILITY’. As much as it is a delight, it is also our RESPONSIBILITY to be the Salt and Light.
What did I realize this time? Having believed that our lives majorly depend on the PURPOSE that God has for us, I was now encountering a new view of how better our lives could be utilized to glorify God by taking up the ‘RESPONSIBILITY’ Jesus speaks about in this passage. If finding our purpose becomes one arm of our calling, carrying this responsibility that Jesus assigns us becomes the other. It is equally important to focus on this responsibility as much as the focus is on finding out the purpose.
All that I learned that day was to follow the responsibility along with the purpose and not just the purpose alone.
The beauty is, Jesus wants us to share knowledge at places where there is a lack of knowledge, He wants us to be just at places where there is no justice, He wants us to be caretakers at places where there is no chance to love. All that He wants is His children to be different from everything that is around them and walk in His Glory.
So… having questioned me, where do I stand in taking up this responsibility? I clearly stand at the start of the line:) But it did not disappoint because of the assurance that our God who has assigned this responsibility would also equip us if we asked Him for it..!!
And as we know, above any RESPONSIBILITY or PURPOSE it is GOD who is our utmost priority and nothing besides Him matters or even has a value. May all the glory and honor be to His Holy Name.
Here is a short prayer.
